Backing Up and Recovery [Part1]

For every OS , one of the most system maintenance feature accepted  is  the backup and recovery procedures , needed when an hard failures occur or users should always have a backup plan prior to any failures.As the   common say is that “try to get backing up data regular  intervals” to avoid the loss of vital data.Here we have some common tools recommended for  Backing Up and Recovery Procedures.Although cloud backup services ( Zmanda , Mozy pro, Symantec ) & Virtual backup services for  servers and desktops are common , the need for free third party software’s occur in most situations since price  or cost comparison or is done.

When backing up you can generally choose between making a copy of everything on your hard drive or picking selected files and  folders.There is plenty of software out there that can do this for you, including programs that allow you to backup selected files incrementally, meaning that your copies are updated every time the original files are edited or updated.Ideally, you will want to make your backups onto external media such as CDs or DVD/USB’s, or a spare hard drive, rather than onto your existing hard drive.This way, if you do lose any information, you should be able to recover everything with relative ease.

Let us begin  start from scratch,with what Windows OS built in facility are?.If you are a Windows XP Professional  Go To Start->All programs ->Accessories->System Tools->Back Up-For XP Home users will need to install the application first.Insert thw Windows install disc ,Navigate to the”\valueadd\MSFT\NTbackup” folder and run the Ntbackup.msi  file.For W7 and Vista users Go To Start->CPanel-> Chose “Backing up your Computer” under System Security or System and Maintenance(Vista) .W7 can create a disk image or backup image(exact copy of everything on disk) without any 3rd party tools.Go To  Start->CPanel-> System Security ->Backup and Restore .Click “create a system image”.After creation if any failure occurs Boot into safemode-> goto repair computer->click System Image Recovery and follow the instructions.
Clone Your Disk
It’s much helpful on creating an identical copy of your hard disk so that if hard disk fails you will be able to get a new hard disk up and  running all previous date as it success.Easeus Disk Copy( an excellent free cloning tool that boot from CD.Select a disk /partition that to copy,chose a destination such as  new hard disk.
Hard Disk Health Check
Windows has an inbuilt facility to check hard disk heallth called Chkdsk Tool, which identify and fix common HDisk problems.Just right click drive properties->tools->checknow.All Hdisk comes with a built in feature called S.M.A.R.T(Self Monitoring ,Analysis and Reporting Technology)that keeps an eye on your Hdisk health and alerts any problems occurs.GSmartControl is a software that can produce a detailed info on this  S.M.A.R.T and also check for errors.
Recovering Date from a failing Hard Disk
After your Hdisk shows the sign of death /failure , it’s time to get back  your data.Move or prefer a new disk as early ,before bad sectors accumulates up.Roadkil’s unstoppable copier is the perfect tool for the job.It copies every thing  including any damaged segments.If it encounters any unrecoverable section. it simply replace the data contained there with blanks
Recover Lost Partitions
TestDisk( can usually fix non booting disks and restore lost partitions with minimum time.Although it’s a text/command line based interface rather GUI, all you have to do is create a log file, select problem disk in the list , select partition table type, and Analyse to find disk structure and lost partitions.
How do I recover files from the Raw Hard Drive?
If a partition is corrupted in Windows, possible (but not all) symptoms are:

  • Invalid media type reading drive.
  • Abort, Retry, Fail?
  • File system is displayed as “RAW”.
